I'm recruiting for an exciting and critical position within the Civil Works Alliance (CWA) - Materials Manager, supporting the delivery of Sizewell C, a 3.2-gigawatt nuclear power station set to power around 6 million homes with reliable, low-carbon electricity for the next 60 years.

This is a career-defining opportunity to join a highly skilled and collaborative team driving one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects. As Materials Manager, you’ll be a subject matter expert in all things materials, leading the specification, testing, and integration of materials across the marine and tunnelling works.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the end-to-end delivery of construction materials testing (concrete, earthworks, grout, aggregates, etc.) across the marine and tunnelling packages.

Review and interpret technical specifications, advising on materials suitability, compliance, and constructability.

Coordinate and oversee laboratory and field testing activities, ensuring full compliance with project and industry standards.

Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure alignment and high standards throughout the supply chain.

Collaborate with internal design teams, temporary works designers, and the lead design consultant to ensure material solutions are fully integrated into permanent and temporary works.

Support procurement and commercial teams by providing robust input into supplier selection, technical compliance, and value engineering opportunities.

Lead technical assurance, materials risk management, and the resolution of complex materials-related issues on-site.

Set and maintain high standards of safety and quality, ensuring procedures, testing protocols, and compliance frameworks are followed consistently.

Manage budgets, resources, and performance of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, technicians, and consultants.

Mentor and develop team members, promoting a high-performance culture and technical excellence.

Key Competencies & Experience:

Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of construction materials, especially concrete mix design, sustainability considerations, and modern testing methodologies.

Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead and motivate diverse teams, manage consultants and suppliers, and deliver against key milestones in a high-pressure environment.

Stakeholder Engagement: Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, designers, and regulatory bodies.

Problem Solving: A proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate risks, identify innovative solutions, and drive continuous improvement.

Industry Knowledge: A thorough understanding of CDM regulations, quality systems, sustainability frameworks, and UK infrastructure procurement practices.

Professional Credentials: Degree-qualified (or equivalent experience) in Civil, Structural, or Materials Engineering. Membership of a relevant professional institution is highly desirable.

Agility & Adaptability: Comfortable working in a complex and evolving project environment, with a positive attitude towards change and innovation.

Compliance & Assurance: Experienced in applying and maintaining industry accreditations and ensuring testing labs meet required standards.

At CWA, we’re committed to delivering Sizewell C to the highest safety, quality, and sustainability standards - and we know we can only do that by attracting top talent from a broad and diverse pool. If you're a materials expert looking to make a genuine impact on the UK's future energy security, I encourage you to take the next step.
