About Our Client:
Our client is a well-established leader in the metal finishing services industry, specialising in heat treatment and plating for a variety of sectors including automotive, aerospace, and engineering. Offering an extensive range of services, including carburizing, annealing, tempering, quenching, and specialized plating (e.g., zinc, nickel, and silver).

Position Overview:
We are currently seeking an experienced Heat Treatment Manager to join our client's team. This role will involve managing and overseeing the heat treatment processes for various metal products. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of product quality, process efficiency, and compliance with all safety and industry regulations. The successful individual will possess a deep understanding of heat treatment techniques for metals, ideally including salt bath heat treatment processing. As part of a small, hands-on team, you will also be involved in other key aspects such as quality methods, testing, and potentially even small repairs when necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the heat treatment department, ensuring smooth and efficient operations.
Oversee and optimise various heat treatment processes, including annealing, quenching, tempering, hardening, stress relieving, and especially salt bath heat treatment processing.
Ensure that all products meet or exceed specifications and quality standards, performing regular inspections and tests as necessary.
Work closely with the production and engineering teams to refine and develop heat treatment procedures for both new and existing products.
Monitor equipment performance, conduct routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot issues, and oversee repairs as needed.
Implement and enforce safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Track inventory levels and manage material orders for heat treatment processes.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, environmental regulations, and quality control procedures.
Maintain accurate records of heat treatment processes, results, and adjustments.
As a small company, the role will involve being “hands-on” in areas beyond heat treatment, such as quality methods, testing, and possibly performing small repairs when needed. Qualifications:

A degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
A minimum of 5 years' experience in heat treatment within the metals industry.
Extensive knowledge of heat treatment processes and equipment (e.g., furnaces, kilns, quenching systems).
Strong understanding of metallurgical properties and their relevance to heat treatment processes for various metals (e.g., steel, aluminium, titanium).
Good working knowledge of heat treatment of metals, especially salt bath heat treatment processing.
Ideal (but not essential): Hands-on experience with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
Strong understanding of quality working instructions, ensuring compliance with standards and documentation.
Proven experience in quality assurance and adherence to ISO/quality control standards.
Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capability to troubleshoot both equipment and process issues.
Solid understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations related to heat treatment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with relevant process control systems. Desirable Skills:

Certification or training in heat treatment or metallurgical processes.
Experience with continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma).

Contract vs Permanent Materials Science Jobs: Which Pays Better in 2025?

Materials science sits at the heart of technological innovation, shaping everything from aerospace alloys and nanocomposites to smart polymers and sustainable packaging solutions. The UK, boasting a strong heritage in advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology, and research, offers a vibrant market for materials scientists seeking to push the boundaries of performance, cost-efficiency, and environmental responsibility. Yet, as you navigate the rapidly evolving materials science landscape in 2025, you may wonder: Should I pursue a day‑rate contracting role, a fixed-term contract, or a permanent position? Which choice will pay better, and which best aligns with my career aspirations? This article delves into the pros and cons of each employment model, highlights typical salary or day‑rate expectations, and provides sample take‑home pay scenarios for an evidence-based comparison. Whether you’re researching biomaterials in a lab or implementing advanced composites in automotive manufacturing, understanding these pathways will help you chart a course for success.

Materials‑Science Jobs for Non‑Technical Professionals: Where Do You Fit In?

Beyond the Microscope From battery gigafactories in Sunderland to carbon‑fibre composites for Formula 1 in Silverstone, Britain’s materials‑science sector is booming. Yet most career advice focuses on PhDs wielding scanning‑electron microscopes. The truth? New materials only create value when product, supply‑chain, compliance and commercial experts translate discoveries into market realities. MakeUK’s Advanced Materials Roadmap 2024 estimates that 37 % of advertised materials‑science vacancies in Britain prioritise business, regulatory or project skills over laboratory work. If you excel at strategy, sustainability or storytelling, this guide reveals where you fit in—no lab goggles required.

Johnson Matthey Jobs in 2025: Your Complete UK Guide to Building Tomorrow’s Catalysts, Batteries & Hydrogen Technologies

Founded in 1817 and now employing more than 13,000 people across 30+ countries, Johnson Matthey (JM) has reinvented itself repeatedly—from precious‑metal assayer to global leader in clean‑air catalysts, hydrogen fuel‑cell components and circular‑materials recycling.
