Job description - the role
The role is ideally suited to someone who can apply materials knowledge in a practical production setting and has experience supporting manufacturing operations rather than purely research-based activities.
Key Responsibilities
Provide materials engineering support to ongoing manufacturing and production activities.
Lead and support material qualification and approval activities for new and existing products.
Assess material selection requirements and provide technical recommendations to engineering and manufacturing teams.
Investigate material-related non-conformances, production issues, and failure mechanisms, implementing effective corrective actions.
Support manufacturing processes and methods, identifying opportunities for process improvement and enhanced material performance.
Review and assess engineering drawing changes where material specifications or manufacturing processes are impacted.
Collaborate with design, quality, production, and supply chain teams to ensure materials meet performance, compliance, and manufacturing requirements.
Conduct technical evaluations and root cause investigations related to material performance and manufacturing challenges.
Support continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.
Provide technical guidance on metallic materials, metallurgy, and manufacturing processes.
Experience
Degree qualified in Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy, or a closely related discipline.
Experience working within a manufacturing or production support environment.
Demonstrable knowledge of material qualification, material selection, and materials approval processes.
Experience investigating and resolving material-related manufacturing issues and non-conformances.
Understanding of manufacturing methods, production processes, and continuous improvement activities.
Ability to apply materials engineering knowledge within a practical engineering and manufacturing setting.
Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, production, and quality teams.
