About the role:
To lead & oversee the technical aspects of projects, teams & operations for the product & systems testing business, including third-party accredited quality systems. To act as an expert in specific engineering areas, applying practical technical knowledge, critical-thinking and problem-solving to deliver business objectives, and drive organizational success.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:

  • Mentor and manage staff, ensuring timely project delivery aligned with business needs.
  • Identify growth opportunities, share with senior management, and lead initiatives using existing resources.
  • Promote staff development through target setting and encouraging ownership.
  • Foster teamwork, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and career development to enhance productivity.
  • Share best practices to improve company performance.
  • Deputise for senior management as required.
    Financial Management & Performance:
  • With senior management, manage commercial and financial activities to support growth and profitability.
  • Develop business cases detailing costs, resource needs, and revenue projections.
  • Optimise resource allocation for financial efficiency.
  • Monitor competitors for strategic insights.
  • Provide performance reports for senior managers.
    Operational Excellence & Efficiency:
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and make informed operational decisions.
  • Implement strategies to boost efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve service.
  • Drive development and maintenance of product and system testing procedures.
  • Manage staff development and ensure equipment readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
    Quality:
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 17025, ISO 9001, and other quality procedures.
  • Align new or updated quality procedures with organisational needs.
  • Ensure documentation and processes meet formal standards.
  • Maintain high technical and quality standards.
  • Review and approve test reports and proposals.
  • Identify and mitigate risks.
    Technical Expertise:
  • Monitor industry trends and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Provide technical guidance and training across departments.
  • Enhance organisational visibility by engaging with industry stakeholders.
    Customer & Market Focus:
  • Ensure an excellent customer experience.
  • Advise on testing requirements and interpret results.
  • Respond to technical enquiries from BSRIA customers and members.
  • Support strategic initiatives and business plans.
    About you:
  • In-depth building services experience from either design, construction or operations background.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices & industry standards including ISO 9001.
  • Practical experience of designing, installing, commissioning or operating building services is desirable.
  • Technical expertise in one or more areas of building services engineering
  • A strong network and reputation in the building services industry
  • Writing ability (publications, reports, bids, web content etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to quality check and proofread documents to a high standard
  • Excellent communication skills - ability to liaise with colleagues and industry partners at all levels, chair meetings and manage group discussions diplomatically.
  • Ability to project manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrate a continuous learning mindset, with the ability to adapt to evolving business and industry needs.
    Qualifications Required:
  • Professional/academic degree in Metallurgy other STEM subject or related field, or 10+ years operational experience
