Senior Thermal Design Engineer - Birmingham

We are supporting a leading-edge technology business in the recruitment of a Senior Thermal Design Engineer for their growing UK R&D centre. This role offers the chance to contribute to the development of high-performance systems used in electrification, sustainable energy, and industrial mobility applications.

This is a key opportunity for an experienced engineer with strong thermal design skills, simulation capabilities, and an interest in advanced materials and cooling technologies used in power electronics or similar high-reliability systems.

Overview for the Senior Thermal Design Engineer job:

  • Lead the thermal design and optimisation of complex power modules and high-density power systems

  • Design and model advanced heat sinks and cooling structures to meet thermal and mechanical requirements

  • Conduct simulation work (thermal, electro-thermal, CFD) to verify performance and guide design iteration

  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers to ensure cross-functional integration

  • Analyse materials, packaging technologies, and bonding techniques for thermal reliability

  • Support prototype development, thermal testing, and reliability assessments

  • Work closely with suppliers on thermal components, materials, and assembly feasibility

  • Create clear documentation, design reports, and technical communication for internal and external stakeholders

    Key Requirements for the Senior Thermal Design Engineer job:

  • Degree in Mechanical, Thermal, or a related engineering discipline (MSc/PhD advantageous)

  • 3–5 years’ experience in thermal or structural design for power systems or high-performance electronic assemblies

  • Strong knowledge of heat transfer, thermal interface materials, and cooling strategies

  • Experience with CAD (Solid Edge/SolidWorks) and simulation tools such as ANSYS or COMSOL

  • Understanding of thermal considerations in system packaging, materials science, and reliability

  • Background in energy systems, EVs, renewables, or electronics packaging is desirable

  • Strong analytical skills, cross-functional collaboration, and technical reporting abilities
