Job Title: Development Engineer (Fixed Term Contract)
Location: Northumberland
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Benefits: Pension scheme, holiday allowance, career development opportunities, flexi-time.
Working Hours: Monday – Friday (early Friday finish)
The Company:
Our client is a globally respected engineering and manufacturing organisation providing advanced electronics solutions for performance-critical applications across regulated markets such as healthcare, aerospace & defence, and automation & electrification. With a strong focus on reliability, sustainability, and innovation, this company partners with OEMs worldwide—supporting new product introduction through to full-scale production. Operating across multiple continents with design and manufacturing facilities, they empower smarter, safer, and more efficient technologies. Candidates will join a culture that values expertise, operational excellence, and doing the right thing.
Job Description:
We are seeking a Development Engineer to join the team on a 12-month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a background in science or engineering who enjoys problem-solving, technical documentation, and supporting the full product life cycle.
Reporting into the Senior Engineering team, the Development Engineer will play a key role in managing projects, supporting manufacturing processes, and liaising with internal departments and external suppliers.
This role is more paperwork and PC task orientated than practical, with typical responsibilities including writing specifications, instructions, routes, and BOM (Bill of Materials) information. While there will be some hands-on work such as lab testing and CAD drawings, this will not form the main focus of the position.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the introduction of new products and overseeing product life cycle activities.
  • Assisting with prototype builds, validation, and qualification samples.
  • Supporting failure analysis and driving yield improvements during early production stages.
  • Preparing and actioning engineering change requests, including BOMs, routes, and drawings.
  • Collaborating with Quality, Test, Procurement, and Production teams to resolve issues.
  • Supporting continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.
  • Occasional visits to customers, suppliers, or training venues, which may involve foreign travel.
    Skills & Experience:
  • Degree or HNC in Engineering, Science, or related discipline (essential).
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment – electronics not essential, but a good understanding of manufacturing processes and controls is required.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and statistical process techniques.
  • CAD experience would be useful but will only form a small part of the role.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A methodical, detail-oriented, and process-driven approach.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office for documentation and reporting.
    Why Should You Apply?
This role offers the chance to step into a varied and stimulating position within a well-respected organisation. As a Development Engineer, you’ll gain exposure to exciting engineering projects, cross-department collaboration, and the opportunity to strengthen your technical and documentation skills.
If you are looking to further your career, have a background in science or engineering, and enjoy working in a structured yet dynamic environment, then this Development Engineer position could be the ideal next step.

Pre-Employment Checks for Materials Science Jobs: DBS, References & Right-to-Work and more Explained

Pre-employment screening in materials science reflects the discipline's unique position at the intersection of advanced manufacturing, nanotechnology innovation, and critical materials development. Materials scientists often have privileged access to proprietary formulations, cutting-edge research data, and strategic materials technologies that form the foundation of organisational competitive advantage and technological leadership across multiple industries. The materials science industry operates within complex regulatory frameworks spanning chemical safety directives, nanotechnology governance requirements, and emerging advanced materials regulations. Materials science professionals must demonstrate not only technical competence in materials characterisation and development but also deep understanding of chemical safety protocols, environmental impact assessment, and the societal implications of advanced materials deployment at scale. Modern materials science roles frequently involve developing materials for aerospace applications, biomedical devices, energy storage systems, and advanced manufacturing processes across multiple regulatory jurisdictions and safety frameworks simultaneously. The combination of chemical expertise, materials innovation capabilities, and industrial application responsibility makes thorough candidate verification essential for maintaining compliance, safety, and technological leadership in materials-driven industries.
