Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer
Location: Hook, Hampshire, RG27 9GR
Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 dependent on experience.
Contract: Full time, Permanent
We are GDS Instruments; we are recruiting, and we want you!
At GDS we design, develop and manufacture materials testing machines and software and software used for the computer-controlled testing of soils and rocks. This technology is used to evaluate the mechanical properties that are key in geotechnical and earthquake engineering design!
We are now looking for a Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer to join our growing team.
Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer – About the role:
The Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer will work collaboratively with the Product Specialist and Director of Engineering supporting the implementation of an engineering strategy that will include future product development, an agreed implementation plan for updates of existing products and work with internal stakeholders across the business to meet the operational needs of the business providing engineering (mechanical and electrical) design and support to both customers and internal stakeholders.
The role is key to supporting other GDS teams in matters of design and providing mentoring support to the other mechanical and electrical product engineers.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
• Produce electro-mechanical 3D models and technical drawings for GDS products under the guidance of the product specialist and Director of Engineering.
• Produce 2D engineering drawings and BOMS from 3D Models
• Generate and maintain all design related documentation. This includes generating design files and logging all relevant calculations, as well as compiling all documentation required for UKCA/CE approval
• Provide complete mechanical and electrical design and information packs to assist the manufacturing team
• Maintain existing design related documentation within the engineering system.
• Arrange and take the lead in design concept and scope meetings where necessary to establish design parameters
• Provide support to the management of the change control process
• Take a leading role in identifying and suggesting improvements with existing product designs and seeking agreement from the Product Specialist
Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience Required:
• Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent NVQ Level 7 qualification.
• Demonstrable team leader experience across a multi disciplined team
• The ability to use SolidWorks 3D package to an expert level is essential, experience of AutoCAD / DraftSight would be beneficial.
• Results orientated with ability to plan and deliver against project deadlines.
• Technical mind-set with demonstrable practical workshop skills.
• Knowledge of pressure vessels and design codes, and CE approval documentation would be helpful.
• Good knowledge of machining operations, materials, finishing processes and fabrication.
• Appreciation of tolerances for application requirements and economic manufacture.
